What song takes you back—instantly—to another time, another place, another version of yourself? In Volume 1 of this collection of stories, you’ll read stories from hundreds of individuals as they share their unique connections to music.

In Music We Heard Along the Way, Eric Gray—author of the baseball memoir collections Bases to Bleachers and Backyards to Ballparks—turns his storytelling lens to his greatest passion: music. What began as a simple idea quickly became an obsession—collecting stories from friends, family, and strangers about the moments when music left a lasting mark on their lives.

Rather than focusing on famous artists or industry history, this rich collection brings together real stories from real people, spanning genres from rock and roll to jazz, classical to hip-hop, and reaching across generations and cultures.

From witnessing legendary performances to quiet, life-changing moments at home, these stories span generations, genres, and continents. You’ll encounter unforgettable experiences—like seeing the Beatles for the first time, unexpected concert mishaps, chance encounters with performers, and the deeply human connections forged through a shared love of sound.

Some stories will make you laugh. Others may catch you off guard and bring a tear to your eye. All of them will remind you of something essential: music is more than entertainment—it’s a thread that connects us, carries our emotions, and marks the passage of our lives.

Whether it’s a lyric that stayed with you, a concert you’ll never forget, or a song tied to someone you love, this book will leave you reflecting on the soundtrack of your life.

Because no matter who we are or where we come from, we’ve all heard the music along the way.

I just finished volume 1 and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's obvious that Eric loves listening to and talking about music. His comments about various artists and contributors are peppered throughout the book. I wish I'd gone to more concerts in the 70's. I'm looking forward to starting the second book tonight.

If Eric is ever doing a book reading and signing near you, please go. He's a natural story teller and loves sharing the stories with as many people as possible.

Just as he did with his two-volume baseball books, Eric Gray now brings evocative tales of music's impact on people in a range of venues and life experiences. Sometimes humorous, sometimes infused with human pathos, these stories reverberate with the message that music has touched all of our spirits.
